79 killed, 202 injured in bomb blasts across Pakistan in August

ISLAMABAD, At least 79 people were killed and 202 others got injured in 19 bomb blasts including one suicide attack that took place across Pakistan during the month of August, according to official statistics.
The official data revealed that the suicide blast that targeted police in southwest of Pakistan killed 39 and injured 40 others.
August was the only month this year, in which less than one hundred killings took place in the bomb attacks by the militants.
Since the Pakistan's incumbent government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif hinted to hold peace talks with militants, especially Pakistani Taliban, a drop was seen in the number of lethal attacks in the country.
Out of 19 attacks, only three were of serious nature that targeted security forces, police and civilians.
The worst one of them was witnessed on Aug. 8, when a suicide bomber attacked a mosque located in the Police Lines in the southwestern provincial capital of Quetta where hundreds of policemen and civilians were gathering to attend the funeral of their colleague who was shot dead by militants. At least 39 people including 16 policemen and five police officers were killed and 40 others injured in the attack that was later claimed by the Pakistani Taliban.
One day before the Quetta blast, a remote controlled bomb explosion targeted the spectators who were leaving a football stadium after watching a match in the southern port city of Karachi, killing 11 and leaving 26 others injured.
During the period, 16 occasions civilians were the direct target of the militants' bomb attacks in 16 occasions that killed 40 people and injured 154 others.
Security personnel and policemen came under attack three times directly in which 25 personnel lost their lives while 48 others sustained injuries.
Militant conducted two direct attacks at security forces during the month and killed four personnel besides leaving eight others injured.
On Aug. 22, at least four security personnel were killed when a roadside bomb blast targeted an army convoy when security personnel were returning to their unit after conducting peaceful by-elections in Karachi.
Pakistan's northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that was always the soft target of the militants remained unhurt as there was no causality reported in any blast.
South Western province of Balochistan was the worst hit province with nine attacks followed by five blasts in northwestern tribal regions and four in southern province of Sindh.
The country's most populated eastern province of Punjab, that contains 60 percent of total population, was hit once when a bomb ripped through a train cabin in the Toba Tek Singh district of the province.
Majority of the bomb blasts were carried out with Improvised Explosive Device (IED) by planting it on roadsides or fixing it in vehicles.
Most of the attacks remained unclaimed.
Experts believed that less number of bomb attacks would be seen in September as the government has postponed the execution of Taliban prisoners and has been working to start dialogue with militants. In August, Pakistani government ordered a temporary stay of executions of prisoners days before they were due to be hanged and the decision was welcomed by Taliban.

K-P chief minister escapes TTP assassination attempt in Mardan

MARDAN: A suicide bomber blew himself up on the route of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti’s convoy in Mardan on Friday (15-02-2013).

Ameer Haider Khan Hoti was travelling to a political rally when the attacker threw a grenade at his car before blowing himself up, senior local official Zaka Ullah told AFP, but no one was hurt.

The attack came less than two months after the Pakistani Taliban killed Hoti’s number two Bashir Bilour in a suicide bombing at a political meeting in Peshawar.

Danishwar Khan, police chief for Mardan, where the attack took place, confirmed it was a suicide bombing.

“The target of the attack was the chief minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. He and other associates remained safe in the attack,” he told AFP.

The umbrella Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) faction said it was behind the attempt on Hoti’s life as well as a series of bombings in the northwest on Thursday that killed at least 16 people.

“We claim responsibility for today’s attack on Chief Minister Hoti. We also claim responsibility for yesterday’s attacks,” TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan told AFP by telephone from an undisclosed location.

“Be sure that we will carry out more such attacks.”

The TTP has stepped up its campaign of violence in recent months, leading to fears that violence could mar general elections scheduled to take place by mid-May.

Earlier this month the group proposed talks with Islamabad provided that certain opposition politicians act as guarantors, but the government insists the militants must declare a ceasefire before coming to the negotiating table.

Ehsan rejected the condition.

“We are ready for peace talks but will not announce a ceasefire,” he said.

A conference in Islamabad on Thursday organised by Hoti and Bilour’s secular Awami National Party called for “peace through dialogue” but offered no concrete suggestions on how this might be achieved.

Suicide attack on Chief Minister KPK Khaider Hoti Convoy

Pakistan, Mardan News – Sources added that a suicide attack reported on the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ameer Haider Khan Hoti and he remained unhurt in a suicide attack in Mardan on Friday.
Ameer Haider Khan Hoti was travelling to a political rally when the attacker threw a grenade at his car before blowing himself up, Zaka Ullah, a senior local official, told AFP, but no-one was hurt.

“Life and death is in Allah’s hands. Efforts for peace will continue,” Chief Minister Hoti said.

According to initial reports the suicide bomber was deterred by the police from approaching the chief minister’s convoy.

Report: Target Killing

ISLAMABAD:
As many as 73 people were killed across the country in 43 incidents of violence during the last week while another 20 were injured and one was kidnapped.
This week, target killings claimed the most lives, with 25 people being gunned down in Karachi alone. Terrorist activities were the second most violent, with 13 incidents across Pakistan, killing 16 people and injuring 18 others.
The statistics were released in a weekly monitoring report prepared by the Free and Fair Election Network (Fafen) that collected data from January 26 to February 1, 2013.
Civilians remained the most affected, constituting 77% of the total victims — a 14% increase from last week’s 63%. The fatalities of security forces dropped from 30% to nine per cent, while those of militants went up from seven per cent to 14%.
Compared to last week’s, the number of incidents doubled from 27 to 43. Twenty people were injured in these incidents, down from the preceding week’s 21.
Region-wise statistics show that as many as 38 people were killed in Sindh and four were injured in target killings, sectarian violence and attacks on political party workers and leaders.
In Balochistan, 21 people were lost to target killings, terrorism and tribal conflicts, while 16 were injured and one was killed in sectarian violence. One was kidnapped in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, according to the report. A counter-terrorism operation in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) killed 13 militants.
There were attacks on a government-run school in Khyber Agency, the office of the deputy election commissioner in Khuzdar, the office of the National Database and Registration Authority in Qilla Abdullah and a high-transmission line in Charsadda.
Another seven people were killed in Karachi in attacks on political party leaders and workers. Gunmen shot dead three workers each of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Sunni Tehreek and the Pakistan Peoples Party.
A counter-terrorism operation in Orakzai Agency killed 13 militants. A tribal conflict also claimed six lives in Dera Bugti while an ethno-political attack in Karachi left a member of an action committee dead.
